Glassblowing
Redesigning the Duvel beer glass. With the help of the glass blowers, it was possible to make the actual glass, I used the centuries old technique of wooden mold blowing, although a very new one to make the mold. I first drew the design in the computer, and then send it to a CNC-milling machine to be cut out of a block of wood. This way it becomes much more accessible for anyone to design something out of glass, and it can be reproduced many times if the right type of wood is used. Because glass blowing is a very costly craft to use, it is important to make the right preparations. A well designed quality mold makes the process much faster and easier for the craftsman.
Balineum Plico – sauna tent
Going back to roman times in Holland, I would like to start to think what a designer might have been like in that time, put myself in his position, and see how the outcome could be useful in the 21st century. Most of the knowledge we have from that time comes from the larger cities and more developed places in the Roman Empire. What is less known about is how and which of this knowledge got through to the outskirts of the empire, like the borderline running through what is now the Netherlands.
The design has 4 main elements, a heater, a tent frame, benches and a canvas, which can be folded and made portable, I want to try to create these 4 elements in such a way that they will be in harmony with each other, but they have to remain individually functioning objects. I placed the heater in the center because it promotes the idea of unity to sit around the source of energy, much like sitting around a campfire.
The purpose of the tent is to function as a sauna, a fire can be lit inside and rock and water will create a pleasant steam bath wherever you like, although it could also be used to just create a cozy warm place to get together, or to sleep in.
